this past summer will be among hundreds of world leaders heading to pretoria to honor him. michelle kosinski is outside mandela's home and where the official memorial service will be held. it's 10:00 p.m. and crowds have been swelling for 24 hours. what's the feeling there? >> reporter: that's right. a lot of people didn't even find out what it happened until midnight here last night. several hours after he passed away. and so it was really early in the morning once dawn broke that people started flooding this place. as soon as they got wortd he died, this became a crowd. it has been nonstop. even though it's 10:00 here now, it is only gotten more and more lively over the last three or four hours. a lot of people are working and came here after work. it is not as if people are staying all day, it's an endless procession, people passing through and many bringing flowers and some of them are bringing gifts for the crowd and women baked cookies and baskets full of cookies and handing them out. it's almost become a sort of peace fest. it's very nice. there's been constant singing. these beautifu

live, i will do what i can to learn from him. to his family, michele and i extend our deepest sympathy and gratitude for sharing this extraordinary man with us. his life's work meant long days away from those who loved him most, and i only hope that the time spent with him these last few weeks brought peace and comfort to his family. to the people of south africa, we draw strength from the example of renewal and reconciliation and resilience that you made real. a free south africa, at peace with itself. that's an example to the world. that's his legacy to the nation that he loved. we will not likely see the likes of nelson mandela again, so it falls to us as best we can to follow the example that he set, to make decisions guided not by hate, but by love, to never discount the difference that one person can make, to strive for a future that is worthy of his sacrifice. for now, let us pause and give thanks for the fact that nelson mandela lived, a man who took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice. may god bless his memory and keep him in peace. >> t

for former president nelson mandela. president obama and his wife michelle, will attend. they are aboard air force one at this hour. and in south africa mandela's family is putting aside its differences this morning. debora patta is in johannesburg. >> good morning. i just spoke to south africa's minister of public works and administration. she was inside the house with the mandelas and described the image in there as calm. the family is very calm. inside is nelson mandela's widow and his former wife winnie. the family has been embroiled in squabbling and fighting over the past six mos but she said you would never think so if you walked in there today. they are the picture of unity, coming together, focused only on nelson mandela. now, as i was talking to them they left to go to one military hospital in pretoria. the minister told me that the body of nelson mandela has now been prepared by undertakers and he is draped in the clothes that eventually he will be buried in. they will spend private minutes communing with nelson mandela. charlie, norah, and gayle? >> thank you. >>> c
